AA identifies six roads as most dangerous in Republic
The AA has reportedly identified six roads in the midlands, east and border areas as the most dangerous in the Republic.
Reports this morning said the roads in question were the N54 between Clones and Monaghan, the N53 between Dundalk and the border, the N55 between Edgeworthstown and Granard, the N52 between Mullingar and Tyrrellspass, the N78 between Athy and Castlecomer and the N75 between Thurles and the N8.
The AA has also reportedly identified another 12 roads that it ranks as “medium-high risk” as part of a Europe-wide road assessment programme.
The danger level of individual roads was calculated by comparing the frequency of deaths and serious injuries on each route with the amount of traffic the road is carrying.
Speaking about the study, AA spokesman Conor Faughnan said it identified a particular problem with single-carriageway roads.
"Irish motorways are very safe. Irish dual carriageways are very safe," he said, "but Irish single-carriageway roads are not.
"That, I think, is where our problem is and that's what we have to address with engineering measures."
