North: Special fund set up for tsunami children
A special fund to help some of the tens of thousands of children affected by the Asian earthquake and tsunami was established in Northern Ireland today by the Honorary Indian Consul.
Lord Diljit Rana, a major hotelier and business man, flies to India tomorrow to see at first hand what can be done.
Lord Rana wants to establish a long term project somewhere in the affected region â not necessarily in India â where children can be helped, possibly through the building of an orphanage or rebuilding of a destroyed village.
He said he knew of the renowned charitable giving of the people of Northern Ireland and wanted to establish a project which would be exclusive to them and where people could see where their money was going.
âThis appeal will be focused on the tens of thousands of children who have been affected by this global disaster. Simply, we aim to be a force for good delivering long term support and love on behalf of the people of Northern Ireland,â he said.
On his return from Asia, Lord Rana said he would lead a team of business and other associates in a programme of fundraising activities that would allow everyone to participate and build a fund to deliver total practical support for children who had lost everything.
âWe want to do something special and lasting, that will allow these children to rebuild their lives, restoring some of the opportunities and support they have lost,â he said.
A special Tsunami Earthquake Northern Ireland Appeal account has been opened at the First Trust Bank.
Lord Rana said donations can be made to the appeal â account no 07930027/ sort code: 93-80-92 at any branch of First Trust, or by post to his company headquarters at Andras House, 60 Great Victoria Street, Belfast, BT2 7BB.
