Ireland 'lagging behind' in producing wind energy

Ireland is seriously lagging behind the rest of Europe in harnessing power through wind energy, according to Airtricity Chief Executive, Eddie O'Connor.

Despite having the best conditions for wind generation in Europe, Ireland's renewable energy production is at such low levels that it corresponds to only 1% of the German level, 3% of Spain’s and 6% of Denmark’s.

The figures were revealed today at a briefing by renewable energy company 'Airtricity''.

Mr O'Connor, said Ireland should be harnessing its natural resources and could be an exporter of power rather than an importer.

The benefits, he said, include creating a native source of power, creating Irish jobs, and helping to

fulfil our Kyoto commitments.

Mr O’Connor said: "We are absolutely amazed that Airgrid put a brake on this and said it should stop."
