Labour: Neary scandal is 'a barbaric case'

Labour Party spokesperson Liz McManus said Health Minister Michael Martin should establish a public inquiry into the actions of a Co Louth doctor who was struck off the medical register yesterday.

Michael Neary, an obstetrician in Drogheda, was struck off by the Irish Medical Council for needlessly removing the wombs of 10 women.

"A terrible injury has been done to these women," she said.

"It's really a barbaric case and it's important that the Minister for Health responds effectively."

Several women have sued Mr Neary in relation to the procedures and one woman has already secured €250,000 in damages at the High Court.

She also called on the minister to introduce legislation to ensure patients are protected in the future.
