Ulster to send its condolences

Thousands of people from Northern Ireland will pay their respects to Britain's Queen Mother when books of condolence are opened in towns and cities today.

A book was being opened at Hillsborough Castle in Co Down, the official residence of the Royal Family when visiting Northern Ireland.

Members of the public wishing to sign it can go to the castle between 4pm and 8pm today and between 10am and 4pm on subsequent days.

Other books were being opened today at Belfast City Hall, Derry’s Guildhall and Craigavon Civic Centre.

The Mayor of Derry, Mildred Garfield, said there was a deep sense of loss in the North over the Queen Mother’s death.

‘‘The Queen Mother will be remembered for her devotion to family life, her personality, grace and strength of character which endeared her to so many people through her extraordinary and long life.

‘‘This is an immense loss for her family, especially so soon after the death of Princess Margaret,’’ she added.
