ASTI official not optimistic about strike

The union representing striking secondary schoolteachers has described the latest move aimed at restarting negotiations by Taoiseach Bertie Ahern as "a small step forward".

The union representing striking secondary schoolteachers has described the latest move aimed at restarting negotiations by Taoiseach Bertie Ahern as "a small step forward".

In a letter, Mr Ahern agreed to refund docked pay without pre-conditions.

The ASTI executive will consider the letter in the next 24 hours, with hopes high that the intervention will lead to a formula for fresh talks.

ASTI officer Charlie Lennon said this morning: "With the dispute entering its fourth month, I would still be reluctant to be optimistic that it may be nearing an end."
