Three die on roads and woman dies in fire

Three people were killed in accidents on the roads in counties Cork, Longford, and Mayo over the weekend.

In Longford, a 36-year-old man died after the car he was driving collided with a minibus on the main Dublin-Longford road at Corboy. Edgeworthstown at 11.10pm on Saturday.

A number of ambulances rushed to the scene as there were 14 children and two adults onboard the minibus.

The victim was seriously injured and was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was taken to the morgue at Mullingar Hospital. The bus driver was also taken to Mullingar hospital. His injuries were described as non-life threatening.

Gardaí appealed for any witnesses to contact Granard Garda station on 043 6687660. In Cork, a 71-year-old cyclist came off his bike on the Castletownbere-Ardgroom road at 4.40pm on Saturday evening.

A local doctor pronounced the man dead a short time later and his body was taken to Cork University Hospital for an autopsy.

Gardaí appealed for any witnesses to contact them at Castletownbere Garda Station on 027 70002.

In Mayo, a female pedestrian, 49, died after she was struck by a car on N60 Castlebar-Claremorris Road near Breaffy Village at about 3am on Saturday. She was taken to Mayo General Hospital where she was pronounced dead. No other injuries were reported.

Gardaí appealed for witnesses to contact them at Castlebar Garda Station on 094 9038200.

Meanwhile, an elderly woman died in a house fire in Dublin yesterday.

A woman aged 70 died in the fire at St Malpas Place, Clanbrassil St, shortly. The fire broke out after 7am. The woman was taken to St James’s Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
