Man goes on trial for murder

A man has gone on trial at the Central Criminal Court, charged with murdering a man with a stab wound to the chest in Waterford last year.

Tadhg Butler, aged 34, with an address at Seafield in Tramore, Co Waterford, denies murdering Michael O’Dwyer, aged 25, at that address on January 10, 2014.

Mr Butler is also known as Thomas O’Grady and is originally from Kilkenny.

Denis Vaughan Buckley, prosecuting, yesterday told the jury how a knife injury was found on the body of Mr O’Dwyer, who was pronounced dead at Waterford Regional Hospital at 1.35am on January 10, 2014.

Mr Vaughan Buckley told the jury there was no sign of defensive injuries on Mr O’Dwyer’s arms or hands.

The court also heard that Mr Butler was arrested on January 10, 2014, on suspicion of assault causing harm to Mr O’Dwyer and he was brought by the gardaí to Tramore Garda Station.

Luke Green, 23, from Kilkenny, one of the four men at the scene on the night in question was then called to give evidence by Noel Whelan, prosecuting.

Mr Green said he, Mr O’Dwyer, and another friend, Tony O’Grady, who is Mr Butler’s nephew, got a taxi to Mr Butler’s house on January 9, 2014

. The four men then drank alcohol.

The court heard that Mr Green dozed off but was woken by Mr O’Grady saying “help or ring an ambulance”.

“Michael was lying on the ground, stabbed, and Tony was helping him,” Mr Green told the court.
