More than €3,000 worth of floodlight bulbs, transformers, and fittings stolen from a GAA club by thieves who scaled 12m-high poles may be used in cannabis grow houses.

Stolen floodlights ‘may be used to grow cannabis’

Seamus Roche, chairman of Cortoon GAA Club near Tuam, Co Meath, says he says he has been “reliably informed” that the lights and fittings could have been stolen for criminal purpose.

The theft is a financial disaster for the club’s fundraising efforts as it “could cost €5,000 to replace the stolen items and hire a hoist and electricians to put the new lights and fittings in place”, while the club’s insurance may not cover the costs, as only the fittings, not the poles, were stolen.

Gardaí in Tuam are appealing for information following the theft from the pitch at Brownsgrove, during which it is thought the thieves may have used special stirrups on their shoes to climb the wooden poles.

The incident happened sometime between 8pm on Monday, Oct 21, and 8pm on Wednesday, Oct 23.
