Ray D’Arcy offers touching on-air tribute to wife-to-be Jenny
The father of two revealed that he will be tying the knot with long-time partner Jenny Kelly in a humanist ceremony this weekend.
They are among a string of Irish couples opting for secular weddings since they became legal at the start of the year.
The couple — who have two children together, six-year-old Kate and their two-month-old son Tom — met in 2005 on Ray’s radio show where Jenny worked as producer and co-presenter.
And yesterday he spoke of his love for his wife-to-be as they prepare to swap wows. He said: “I am really looking forward to Saturday and committing to Jenny Kelly and committing to life together and sort of putting the seal of approval on our family.
“Not that that is what we are doing it for but it’s great that Tom and Kate are going to be there to share the big day, particularly Kate.
“Tom won’t know much about it. I’m really looking forward to it, it’s going to be a great day.
“Jenny, I do love you,” he added at the end of his touching speech.
The presenter, who has openly spoken about being an atheist, told his listeners that they will be having a humanist ceremony.
And he invited three other grooms-to-be who are also walking down the aisle on Saturday to talk about their preparations for the big day. He said he was glad to see that people are breaking away from traditional ceremonies since secular ceremonies have been legalised.
He said: “I think it’s great that more and more people are just breaking away from the tradition. In 20 years time we won’t recognise the whole wedding day, I would imagine.”
However, he did reveal that his own mother was reminding him about the wedding traditions this week.
“I was speaking to my mother yesterday. She is a lovely woman and I love her dearly. She is amazing and she is the nicest women in Kildare.
“I think that because she is my mother but on a number of occasions she said ‘that is the way it is done in the old times’.”
The presenter, who has previously said that he had been losing sleep over his groom’s speech, said he hasn’t written it down.
He said: “I was saying to someone the other night. They asked if I had written it yet. I said ‘I’m going to be doing it in my head and he said ‘Really?’
“Jenny is going to speak after me. My main concern is that people enjoy it and have a good time.”
