Food stall to whet the appetite with region’s delights
Goats milk, soft cheeses and yoghurts from Goleen along with melons, peppers, herbs and vegetables from Durrus are some of the products expected to join smoked salmon, chorizo, pate, fudge, mustard, biscuits chocolates, chillis, hummus, jams, apple jelly and even packs of seeds on the Fresh from West Cork stall, which organisers expect to have up and running in the market by Mar 17.
It’s the brainchild of farmer, businessman and social entrepreneur Walter Ryan-Purcell from Goleen, who believes the stall could also be a major stopping-off point for visitors seeking tourism information on the West Cork region.
“Basically, artisan food producers in West Cork could sell produce from this stall,” he said, suggesting he was talking good food products of all kinds, not just organically grown produce.
Cork City Council had already given provisional permission for the venture which, he believes, could not only promote tourism and activities in the region but could create jobs in the West Cork food sector.
Mr Ryan-Purcell is seeking about 50 people to fund the set-up by pledging €100 each to the fledgling business.
“I already have two very experienced and highly efficient people interested in running the stall,” he said.
