Harbour a hive of activity for event

For the first time, organisers have decided to hold a two-day event on Sep 15 and 16, offering activities both on and off the water.

The second-largest natural harbour in the world will host a Cobh to Blackrock sailing race, kayaking on the River Lee, crab fishing in Cobh, and a free open day at the maritime college, where visitors will be able to see ship’s bridge simulators, the survival pool, and marine workshops.

They can also view screenings of 8 Minutes: The Ford Short Film Competition, which was part of the Titanic 100 event.

Spike Island will host live music and children’s entertainment, and provides an opportunity to stroll on the recently completed walking trail around the perimeter of Fort Mitchell, with stunning views of Cork Harbour. Military exhibitions will also be held on the island.

Camden’s Fort Meagher will host military reenactments on both days, while on the Sunday it will stage children’s entertainers, fancy dress competitions and live music.

People can dabble in a bit of crab fishing at the Promenade in Cobh from 3pm to 5pm on the Saturday, while on Sunday they can take a Life Along the Seashore walk at 3pm.

Blackrock Castle Observatory will present theatrical tours on both days, detailing the castle’s colourful 400-year history.

On Saturday, emergency services will conduct demonstrations and drills to showcase their skills, including simulated crash scenes, fire-fighting displays, simulated rescues, and abseiling from buildings.

The Irish Naval vessel LE Ciara will be docked in Cork city and open for tours on both days.

The open weekend is organised by the Management Focus Group, comprising representatives from UCC, Cork City and County councils and Port of Cork.
