Two men due in court over body found in bog
The men, aged 19 and 28 years, are due to appear before a sitting of Newcastle West District Court in connection with the probe into the death of the man believed to be Bruno da Souza Silva, 28, a Brazilian.
He had been living with his partner in Gort, Co Galway, from where had been missing for just under a month. He was last seen in Ballyduff, Co Kerry, in mid-February. His body was found at Shroneowen, in Tullamore bog, about 8km from Listowel, on Sunday.
Assistant state pathologist Dr Margot Bolster arrived at the scene at lunchtime yesterday and the body was removed to Kerry General Hospital, Tralee, for a postmortem which was continuing last night.
Intensive Garda activity, involving up to 40 personnel, continued through the day, ranging over a number of areas in north Kerry.
A house was cordoned off and technically examined at Ballyconry, near Ballyduff, about 20km from the scene, while divers from the Garda sub-aqua team searched the River Cashen for a murder weapon, possibly a knife.
Both sides of the roadway leading to the spot where the body was found and roadside ditches in the Lisselton area were also combed.
Two cars have been impounded and are being technically examined by gardaí.
Meanwhile, the owners of the stretch of bogland in which the body was found said they did not became aware of the discovery until almost two hours afterwards, on Sunday afternoon.
Pat and Phil O’Sullivan were stunned to learn the man’s body could have lain in a boghole at Shroneowen, for a number of weeks.
“We feel very sorry for the poor man and his family who must be going through an awful trauma.”
Noel Lynch, chairman of Ballylongford Enterprise Association, said some people in the area were concerned for their safety, especially in the light of the recent closure of Ballylongford Garda Station, and were suggesting the station should be reopened.
