Islanders to hold ‘open days’ in bid to attract visitors
For the first time ever, eight of the islands off the south-west coast are getting together to showcase what they have to offer.
This weekend Bere, Dursey, Garnish, Heir, Long, Cape Clear, Sherkin and Whiddy islands will host open days in the hope of attracting new blood and boosting tourism.
The organisers say the theme of the weekend is to become an “islander” enjoying both reduced prices on events and services, as well as enjoying free activities.
Reduced fares will operate on most ferries to the islands and when visitors arrive, they will be greeted by locals and offered a number of activities.
For example, on Sherkin, they can enjoy a lecture on the island’s history and guided walks. The Monkstown Chamber Choir will be performing and the national school will have an open day. There are also scenic boat trips around the island for as little as €5 a head.
People visiting Bere Island can partake in guided tours taking in heritage sites and there’s a children’s walk exploring the shoreline.
Visitors to Cape Clear can enjoy bird watching courses, boat trips and traditional music sessions.
Dursey has no public facilities but one local lady has kindly offered to open her house, serving tea, coffee and scones.
A Discover Dursey guided tour takes place tomorrow from noon to 3pm and a cycle/walk viewing the island’s heritage will take place at the same times on Sunday.
The lobster fishermen on Heir island are planning one-hour trips around the island and at 1pm each day, locals will take people on walks around the island.
The weekend initiative stems from the West Cork Islands’ Interagency and its strategic plan, launched last October.
Crucial to the plan are the islands working together to becoming a greater force in developing themselves.
Part of that initiative resulted in the production of West Cork Islands brochure which is being distributed around the country in an effort to attract more tourists.
