Man, 80, killed crossing the road
Former Mallow Sugar factory worker Jim Barrow, who was a widower with a grown-up family, died at Cork University Hospital (CUH) in the early hours of yesterday morning.
He was struck by a car as he crossed the road at Dromahane Cross at 9.30pm on Saturday.
Mr Barrow was removed by ambulance from the scene to CUH. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
Mayor of Mallow Cllr Willie O’Regan described the late Jim Barrow as a “lovely” man who had worked for many years at the sugar factory.
“He was a very quiet man. It is terrible to think a lovely man like that would die in that way. It is an awful tragedy for his family,” said Mr O’Regan.
Local Fianna Fáil councillor Dan Joe Fitzgerald said the accident had shocked members of the close-knit community. Prayers were offered at St Peter the Apostle’s Catholic Church in Dromahane yesterday in memory of Mr Barrow.
