Serious injuries after hit and run

GARDAÍ are following a “definite line of inquiry” following a hit and run incident in Clare on Sunday morning which left two men trapped in the wreckage of their car with serious injuries.

The driver of a van involved in the collision allegedly fled the scene.

Two occupants of the car were trapped inside the mangled wreckage and are receiving treatment in hospital for serious injuries.

The collision occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning at Gorteen about 5km from Ennis on the Quin road.

A red Volkswagen Transporter van travelling from Quin towards Ennis was reportedly involved in a head-on collision with the Ford Focus car.

The driver and front-seat passenger of the car were seriously injured, while the rear seat occupant managed to escape from the wreckage with just minor injuries.

Two units of the fire brigade, along with ambulances and a rapid response advanced paramedic unit from Ennis attended the scene.

Fire crews had to use specialist cutting equipment to free the injured driver and front-seat passenger from the car. All three occupants were taken to the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Limerick where two are still undergoing treatment for their injuries.

The two men who were seriously injured, one in his 50s and the other in his 30s, sustained multiple injuries including fractured limbs, broken ribs and a broken nose.

While gardaí are following a “definite line of inquiry” in relation to the incident, they have asked anyone with information to contact them on 065 684100.
