Thieves scale 40ft building in jewel heist
Gardaí investigating the theft from the jewellery shop in Co Cork believe it took place during the hours of darkness sometime over last weekend.
The raiders are believed to have gone into the car park at the rear of the former co-op shop in Fermoy from where they climbed onto the roof of the adjoining Barber’s jewellers.
After scaling the building and getting through the skylight they then smashed in an internal door before grabbing a large number of gold and silver bracelets and rings.
“The company is carrying out an audit on what is exactly missing, but it certainly amounts to a substantial sum,” a garda spokesman said.
The alarm was deactivated. In the previous few days it had gone off a couple of times, leading gardaí to believe there’s a possibility that the raiders had been testing the system in advance of the robbery.
The jewellery was discovered missing at 10am yesterday as staff opened for business at the shop on the town’s Patrick Street.
“They closed the shop last Saturday at around 6.30pm so the burglary took place sometime between then and 10am (Monday). But we believe it was likely to have happened during the early hours of Sunday or Monday,” the garda spokesman said.
Detectives were yesterday studying CCTV footage taken in the area in the search for clues to the identity of the raiders.
A thorough forensic examination was also undertaken on the premises.
Gardaí say they are anxious to hear from anybody who saw anything suspicious over the weekend near the jewellery shop.
They are also calling to Cash For Gold shops in the region with a list of items in case the robbers decide to try and off-load them at these outlets.
“We will also be advising them not to take any substantial amounts of jewellery from anybody,” the garda spokesman said.
