10-year strategy bids to enhance life of islanders
The strategy, developed by local interagency groups, has a number of key aims for the social and economic development of Cape Clear, Bere, Whiddy, Dursey, Long, Sherkin and Heir islands.
A number of working groups have been established under the umbrella organisation the West Cork Islands Interagency Group, some members of which are further promoting the islands as offshore tourist destinations.
With tourism in mind, some islanders will be offered food training courses while Bord Fáilte is preparing to launch a tourist brochure dedicated to the seven islands.
In addition, a feasibility study is about to commence on developing the Lonehort Battery site on Bere Island. An audit is also being carried out on other potential visitor attractions on the island, to see if they can be further developed.
Some developments include the creation of a looped walk on Cape Clear.
Meanwhile, a ferry ticketing office has been developed in Baltimore Harbour while there are also plans in place to promote and develop a seafood festival on Bere and Whiddy Islands.
The HSE is also working on developing a primary health care model for the islands.
Speaking at the strategy launch on Bere Island yesterday, Minister Carey said the government recognises the special social, cultural and linguistic contributions the islands make to the nation.
MC Micheál O Ceadágain, from Cape Clear, said islanders know the problems and solutions in relation to creating a sustainable island life in the future.
“This is a very positive focus for the West Cork islands and along with the ongoing work of the West Cork Islands Interagency Group, it is very much welcomed by the community,” he said.
