Man charged as Polish worker left fighting for his life
The 27-year-old victim was attacked in Dublin early on Saturday morning while on his way to work.
He was discovered by security staff at about 5am on a roadway in the Newtown Industrial Estate in Coolock, where he worked in a fish processing factory.
The victim was taken to Beaumont Hospital with serious head injuries and last night his condition was described as critical.
The man charged was due to appear before the Court of Criminal Justice at 10.30am.
A second man arrested in relation to this incident remained in custody last night at Raheny Garda Station while a third male in his late teens was also being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Clontarf Garda Station.
A Garda spokesman appealed for anyone who was on the Malahide Road between the Hilton hotel and the Darndale roundabout between 4am and 5am to contact Coolock Garda Station on 01-6664200.
Meanwhile Gardaí are awaiting the results of an postmortem examination before possibly launching a murder inquiry into the death of English man Raymond Bates.
The 49-year-old pipe-layer, of Peterlee, County Durham, had been driving through the Sandymount suburb of Dublin last Sunday, when he had a run-in with the driver of another vehicle.
When the two cars reached a junction the other driver stepped out of his car, and an argument broke out.
Gardaí said the attacker went to the boot of his car and took out a hurley.
It’s understood he then struck Mr Bates over the head at least four times.
Both drivers left the scene but a taxi driver who had been in the vicinity reported the incident. Mr Bates did not report the attack but went to St Vincent’s Hospital the following day. He was transferred to Beaumont Hospital and he died in the hospital’s intensive care unit last Friday as a man presented himself to Gardaí in relation to the incident.
