Class act: Search begins for most inspiring teacher

TEACHERS all over the country will be keeping their fingers crossed that pupils young and old will nominate them for a people of the year award.

Class act: Search begins for most inspiring teacher

For the first time in the prestigious event’s history, a special category at next September’s event will honour Ireland’s most inspiring teacher.

Main organisers Rehab yesterday launched the search for nominations, which can include working teachers or those who have retired from the classroom.

Colin Morgan, general manager of sponsors Quinn-Insurance, said the special award has been created to shine a light on the unsung heroes who have played an important role in Irish people’s lives.

“They nurture the talents of our young people, expand their horizons and introduce them to the world of learning. Many from the profession go unacknowledged for their years of hard work, commitment and dedication above and beyond the call of duty,” he said.

The winner of the coveted prize will join a list of illustrious past people of the year award recipients, including golfer Pádraig Harrington and peacemakers Bertie Ahern, Tony Blair, Martin McGuinness and Ian Paisley.

The organisers have sought public nominations for different once-off categories in recent years, with Christy Moore chosen in 2007 as Ireland’s greatest living musician and Terry Wogan previously being awarded best entertainer.

While groups and individuals are welcome to nominate a teacher for the award, the decision will be made by the judges rather than being based on vote numbers. There are no criteria for selection and nominations are welcome from current students or those whose adults lives have been inspired by one of their teachers. All entries should include details of your nominee and an explanation of why they should win an award.

lNominations can be submitted online at www.peopleoftheyear.com or by emailing poy@quinn-healthcare.com. Forms are available from Rehab Group, Roslyn Park, Sandymount, Dublin 4, or by calling (01) 205 7200.
