Limerick gives actor big send-off
Hundreds gathered at the University of Limerick Concert Hall to wish Stephen Ryan success in his bid to follow in the footsteps of Richard Harris.
Stephen, 19, from Mungret has secured a coveted place at the prestigious Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts.
He will study a three-year BA honours course in Musical Theatre Performance, which will include modules in acting, singing, movement and dance.
One of the top drama schools in Britain, the Mountview Academy has trained some fine performers such as Connie Fisher (Sound of Music), Julie Atherton (lead role in Avenue Q), Mark Powell (Evita) and Tony Timberlake (Cats and Les Miserables).
West End producer, Limerick man Kevin Wallace, said: “Securing a place at Mountview is a great credit to Stephen. He deserves to be supported during this initial training and I welcome him to a rewarding and challenging profession.”
Among those who took part in last night’s farewell concert was Shonagh Daly, the Limerick performer who has taken part in many big West End productions.
Another well-wisher last night was Pat Shortt.
Pat said: “Congrats to Strephen on securing his place on this very prestigious course.”
Stephen has been taking part in theatrical productions in Limerick since he was four.
He appeared with Opera Ireland when he was five.
While attending Crescent College Comprehensive, he took part in the annual school show.
The school productions in which he had lead roles include Les Miserables, Fiddler on the Roof, and Joseph.
With CentreStage Theatre School he played lead roles in Mort and Aladdin.
He has also treaded the boards of the Belltable, LIT Millennium Theatre, Mary Immaculate College and UL Concert Hall.
