Teenager charged over fatal stabbing

A YOUNG man appeared in court yesterday charged in connection with the death of a teenager.

Alan Young, 19, was fatally stabbed early on Sunday morning during a disturbance in the Irishtown area of south Dublin.

Mark Greene, also 19, was charged before Dublin District Court with assault causing harm.

Mr Young, from George Reynolds House in Irishtown, was pronounced dead on arrival at St Vincent’s Hospital.

The incident occurred near Irishtown Stadium at around 1.20am after the deceased left a 21st birthday party at the nearby Clanna Gael Fontenoy GAA club.

It is understood that Mr Young’s friends tried to keep him alive, as they waited for an ambulance.

Mr Green, from Trintonville Road, Sandymount, was arrested just before just 5pm on Sunday and charged, an hour later, under Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Act. The court heard that more serious charges may follow and gardaí applied to have the accused be remanded in custody.

The garda accepted statements that Mr Green had never been in trouble before and had lived at his home address all his life.

Wearing a black suit, Mr Green sat during the brief hearing at the Bridewell Courthouse.

Judge Bryan Smyth remanded him in custody, setting his bail at €1,000 with an independent surety of €5,000, half in cash. Mr Green’s father Gerard agreed to pay the surety.
