World brought to account by Munster students

MUNSTER has produced two of the world’s top three new accountants.

World brought to account by Munster students

Griffith College Cork (GCC) students Stephen Gahan, aged 22, from Grantstown in Co Waterford, and James Bradley, aged 25, from Barrack Street in Cork, both aced their recent Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) exams — the premier accounting qualification exams.

Stephen was placed first in the world and James was placed third after their exam results were released.

They both breezed through paper 3.2 on advanced taxation and outscored over 370,000 students from 170 countries. Stephen works with Ernst & Young in Waterford.

James works with William Bradley and Co accountants based on the South Mall in Cork.

GCC lecturer, Eamon Staunton, said he was delighted by their performances.

“To have a student in the top 10 in the world is phenomenal, but to have two students in the top three is unbelievable,” he said. “We are understandably delighted for Stephen and James and these results firmly place Griffith College Cork as one of the top educational establishments for the ACCA examinations.”

And if that wasn’t enough, fellow GCC students Margaret Morrissey and Jerry Russell took first place in Ireland in their exams.

They scored top marks in paper 3.1 on audit and assurance, and in paper 3.6 on advanced corporate reporting. They were placed 12th and 16th in the world respectively.

Jim Daly, a course director with GCC, said the students’ success was based in part on the quality and professionalism of the college’s lecturing team.

“The students who achieved these remarkable results deserve credit for the work they put in,” he said.
