Financial sector lends city a boost with 300 new jobs

Northern Trust, which is a Chicago-based company, will set-up operations at the National Technological Park in Plassey.

Limerick East Fianna Fáil TD, Peter Power, said the 300 new jobs would be a further boost to employment in the city.

Mr Power said: “I am delighted to see this development with so many new jobs in the financial sector. These will give very good opportunities.”

And in another move, more than 100 workers whose jobs were under threat after a fire burned down a west Limerick factory last year, moved into a new plant. All the jobs were saved.

A state of the art facility was built to replace the premises which was destroyed.

Myson Scanglo in Newcastle West operated out of a leased building after the fire destroyed it’s factory in Roches Road on July 9.

There were fears at the time that the Finnish owners of the company would transfer manufacturing to another plant abroad.

However, at a meeting in Newcastle West they pledged to continue manufacturing in the town and to build a replacement plant.

Pat Condon of SIPTU praised the company for saving their operation which makes central heating valves for the British market.

Mr Condon said: “All the 105 jobs have been secured and the workers played their part in working very flexible hours over the past year to minimise the loss of production.

“The company was also faced with a huge increase in its raw material; brass. The fact that the factory is now reopened today is a win/win situation all around,” he said.

The Finnish owners met with workers in Newcastle West after the fire and pledged to resume production at a new plant which they said they would build.

Mr Condon said: “The company were true to their word.”

West Limerick has been hit by a number of major jobs blows in the past year with 250 workers being made redundant at the Castlemahon poultry plant and the closure of another poultry producer, Kantoher with the loss of 70 jobs.
