Girl, 14, dies from suspected solvent abuse

A post mortem was carried out yesterday on the body of the 14-year-old girl who was declared dead by a doctor at Lower Codrum, Macroom, Co Cork, shortly after 6pm on Saturday.

It is understood the girl may have been with friends when she became ill. An aerosol can was found near the scene.

The doctor was unable to resuscitate the young teenager, who was then taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital.

The girl was a pupil at St Mary’s, Macroom.

Yesterday, a garda spokesperson said they were still awaiting the results of the post mortem and would be paying special attention to the toxicology report.

Gardaí would not comment on reports that the teenager may have died from solvent inhalation.

The name of the dead girl was being withheld until all her relatives had been informed of the tragedy.
