Dean of Cork named to succeed bishop who resigned over separation
The Very Reverend Michael Burrows, 45, will be installed during a ceremony in Christ Church Cathedral, which is expected to be held in mid-May.
His replacement in Cork has yet to be decided.
Dean Burrows was elected at a meeting of the Church of Ireland’s Episcopal Electoral College in Dublin’s Christ Church Cathedral on Friday.
Dean Burrows is married to Claire, who is a barrister and part-time law lecturer at University College Cork, and they have four children, Henry, Andrew, Gráinne, and James.
The Dean was out of the country yesterday and unavailable for comment, a diocesan spokesperson said.
The Archbishop of Dublin, Most Reverend Dr John Neill, welcomed his appointment last night.
“Michael is a priest who has great pastoral and scholarly gifts which have been recognised in the Church of Ireland and indeed throughout the Anglican communion,” he said.
“He has represented the Church of Ireland very ably at the Anglican Consultative Council.
“My prayers for him, Claire and the family are promised as he prepares for his Episcopal Ordination.”
Dean Burrows was educated at Wesley College, Dublin. He studied history and political science at Trinity College before studying the 15th century Irish Church for his masters degree.
He was ordained in 1988 and served his curacy at Douglas Union West (Frankfield), Cork.
He became Dean of Residence at Trinity College Dublin in 1991 and Minor Canon at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin.
In 1994 he moved back to the Cork diocese to be Incumbent of Bandon Union and in 1996 was appointed Canon at Cork and Cloyne Cathedrals.
In 2002 he was appointed Dean of Cork and Incumbent St Fin Barre’s Union.
The Diocese of Cashel and Ossory includes the dioceses of Cashel, Waterford and Lismore, with Ossory, Ferns and Leighlin.
