A TRAINING project which helps pub and club staff identify and deal with the negative effects of alcohol or drugs is to be expanded.

SHB to expand training scheme for pub staff

Publicans, bar staff, and security staff from 13 Cork city pubs and clubs took part in the successful pilot programme, the first of its kind in Ireland. It is hoped to expand the Cork Local Drugs Task Force-funded scheme into the county and to Kerry.

The Club Cork Alcohol and Drugs Awareness training programme was developed by the Southern Health Board (SHB) with local gardaí and publicans.

Pub staff were trained by emergency medical technicians in first aid, basic life support and CPR. Security staff were trained in effective communication skills.

Accident and emergency consultants gave talks on their & experiences in dealing with people suffering the effects of drugs or alcohol.

Gardaí also gave talks on legislation, garda ID cards, blood alcohol concentration, legal driving limits and safe transport options.

SHB health promotion officer Sharon McGillacuddy co-ordinated the course. “Feedback has been very positive with participants and trainers enjoying the interactive and practical nature of the course,” she said.

SHB chairman Cllr Damian Wallace praised the partnership approach.

“Levels of drinking and drug use and their associated problems have escalated and it is important to equip those working in such environments with the relevant information and skills,” he said.

Scotts & Reardons pub owner Paul Montgomery said: “This training programme gives our staff a chance to acquire or upgrade skills to help them deal with difficult situations professionally and swiftly.”

Cork bars that took part included Scotts, Reardons, the Washington Inn, Raven Bar, Western Star, Ovens Bar, The Bailey, Flannery’s Bar, Courthouse Tavern, the Parnell Bar, Classic Bar and Cleavers Bar.

Interested publicans can contact the SHB’s Health Promotion Department on 021-4921670.
