THE Government will not recall iodine tablets distributed in 2002 despite them offering no protection in the event of a catastrophe at Sellafield, it has emerged.

About 14.2 million tablets were sent out by the Government at a cost of €630,000.

At a conference between Louth County Council and British Nuclear Fuels Ltd (BNFL) last week, it was revealed that Sellafield no longer produces radioactive iodine, which the tablets would protect against.
