Vertigo tour nets U2 €214m

ROCK giants U2 pocketed an incredible €214 million last year from their sell-out Vertigo tour.

According to Rolling Stone magazine, Bono, Edge, Larry Mullins and Adam Clayton made the fortune playing for three million fans worldwide, selling out 118 shows.

The band members have always split their profits five ways along with manager Paul McGuinness.

The tour was the second biggest in the US in 2005 with the Dublin rock legends being pipped at the post by ageing British group The Rolling Stones.

The longest leg of the Vertigo tour was across the US, where U2 played 82 dates and shared the stage with special guests including Bruce Springsteen.

Figures released last month show the estimated income from the North American part of the tour netted the 40 somethings almost $139m, or €115m.

But again, they were beaten in the US tour income chart by The Rolling Stones, who earned an estimated $162m (€133m) from just 42 performances Stateside last year.

Vertigo's final leg will kick off next month, when U2 take off again to play concerts in countries including Mexico, Argentina, New Zealand and Australia.

The tour kicked off in Britain last March, before U2 played three nights at Dublin's Croke Park for the first time ever.

The late June series of shows is estimated to have grossed the band an amazing $21m (€17.32m) from almost a quarter of a million ticket sales.

During the tour, Bono met up with United States President George Bush, British Prime Minister Tony Blair and United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan.

He also helped to organise last summer's Live 8 concerts, with U2 playing at the London gig.

His campaigning work to gain debt relief for the world's poorer countries helped Bono earn the shared accolade of Time magazine's People of the Year awards last month, although he recently admitted his outspokenness on global poverty issues had caused tension within the band.
