Irish DJs set to spin their way into record books

FOUR Irish DJs hope to spin and set records in a charity event with a difference next month.

Irish DJs set to spin their way into record books

The plan is to break the world record for the longest playing DJ by playing for 74 hours. The attempt will be made by local radio station hosts at venues in their own cities on May 22.

They will only be allowed a 15-minute break every eight hours if their efforts to gain a place in the Guinness Book of Records are to be successful. “It’s great to be involved in something fun and exciting and have tangible benefits for the charities involved,” said Galway Bay FM’s Jimmy Norman. He will be doing his bit at the Galway Radisson SAS Hotel for Operation Rudolph’s nominated charities, The Chernobyl Children’s Project, the 2003 Special Olympic World Summer Games and The Alzheimer Society of Ireland.

The other radio stars involved are Catriona Tierney of Limerick Live 95FM (playing at ICON in Limerick), Keith Cunningham from Red FM (at Scott’s bar in Cork) and Jenny Greene from Dublin’s 104FM (venue to be announced). The Tiger Beer longest playing DJ Challenge will not only involve a world record attempt, but will also be a participative social occasion.

Over the three days, the venues plan to host an array of indoor activities from a fashion show to special guest appearances, raffles, spot prizes and auctions. All the events aim to ensure the DJs are continually motivated during the challenge.

“I’m delighted to have the opportunity to be part of this truly exciting challenge. 74 hours is a long time and will be a real test on the energy levels but I’m focused and plan to claw my way to the end,” said Keith.
