The very last Christmas Magical Parade of 2025 is taking place in Killarney on Saturday, December 20. If you and your family have yet to experience the wonder of the streets coming to life with colourful floats, festive music, and beloved fairytale characters accompanied by Santa and his elves, this will be your final chance to do so.

The parade will start at 6pm and last for one hour. But it’s worth getting there early as the Snow Queens and their magical horses roam the parade route from 5.30pm onwards. Special efforts have been made to make these parades more accessible, and there will be a viewing space set aside for wheelchair users at Market Cross and an autism-friendly viewing area in Áras Phádraig on the Lewis Road.

Flower power PJs

New pyjamas like this flower power set from the Dublin-based online baby store thelittleone.ie makes a lovely Christmas gift for children.

Its bright, funky style blends quality with practicality. It’s made from 100% heavy cotton, which is soft enough for sensitive skin yet durable enough to last.

Its drawstring waistband allows for a snug, customisable fit that can be adjusted as children grow. It comes in sizes to fit two- to six-year-olds, and it costs €15.

Retro record player

Go retro with your gifts this Christmas with Mo Chéad Seinnteoir Ceirníní or My First Record Player from My Irish Books.

This mini record player is designed to bring the storybooks and music discs to life. It’s simple to use and requires no setup. It runs on three AAA batteries, which are included so kids can enjoy it straight out of the box. All they have to do is place a disc on top, and the music or story begins.

The record player costs €59.95 and comes with 16 discs, each introducing children to different elements of traditional Irish music, song, and culture.

Heartwarming paperback

The new paperback edition of Frindleswylde by sisters Natalia and Lauren O’Hara would make an ideal stocking filler for young bookworms this Christmas. Aimed at children aged five and older, it tells the story of Cora, who lives with her grandmother in a house in the woods.

The pair abide by one rule: as soon as the first snow falls, they must be careful never to let the light out or the winter in. Winter is personified by a selfish, cunning boy called Frindleswylde, and when the day comes that Cora breaks the rule, her granny and the light vanish into the frozen underworld that is Frindleswylde’s kingdom. It’s up to her to rescue them, and the story tells of her attempts to do so.

The book has echoes of classic children’s characters such as Jack Frost, the Snow Queen, and Peter Pan. It’s gorgeously illustrated with pops of colour against a wintry background of blues, whites, and greys. It also has a heartwarming message about the pain and pleasure that can come from engaging with the world and loving the people around us. It retails from €10.

Meditation and lunch

Take some time out from the hustle and bustle of the pre-Christmas period on World Meditation Day this Sunday, December 21. Himalayan Meditation Ireland, an organisation that offers free meditation sessions at venues across the country, is hosting a free family-friendly meditation and lunch at Aisling Annocotty Football Club in Limerick.

From 11.30am to 1pm, this non-religious event will offer fun mindfulness games, simple breathing and grounding exercises, collective meditation sessions and creative art activities for kids, as well as separate mindfulness, meditation, and breathwork sessions for adults.

A complimentary lunch will be provided for everyone afterwards. While this event is free, anyone who wants to attend must register in advance via eventbrite.ie.
