Working Life: Seeing advanced specialist pharmacists come together forthe first time was incredibly rewarding

“I’m originally from Cork or as we like to call it, ‘the real capital’. From an early stage, I gravitated towards science, particularly chemistry and biology. I wanted a career where I could make a meaningful impact on people’s lives, which ultimately led me to pharmacy.
“One of the highlights of my career so far was being appointed the first pharmacist to join the HSE Spark Innovation Programme. I work with pharmacists and multidisciplinary teams across the health service to identify unmet needs and support the development, testing and diffusion of solutions that improve patient care and service delivery.
“One pharmacy-led project focused on introducing automated syringe-filling technology in the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital to support the preparation of intravitreal injections (medication placed directly into the eye’s vitreous cavity) used in the treatment of retinal diseases. The project aims to increase capacity, improve efficiency, and enable greater use of the most cost-effective treatment options. It demonstrates how frontline ideas can be translated into innovations that benefit patients and the wider health service.
“A particularly proud achievement was leading the development and delivery of the inaugural ‘Future Rx’ networking day in March 2026. The event brought together the first national cohort of advanced specialist pharmacists to connect, learn and help shape the future of the role.
“Seeing that community come together for the first time was incredibly rewarding. There was a real sense of ambition and momentum in the room, and it felt like an important step forward for advanced pharmacy practice in Ireland.

“Currently, a major focus of my work is leading the organisation and delivery of the HSE Spark Summit 2026 alongside my Nursing and Midwifery Fellow colleague, Ann Marie Kiernan. The summit showcases innovative ideas, from digital solutions and service redesigns to frontline improvements that are making healthcare more effective, efficient and person-centred.
“Outside of work, I enjoy the outdoors and staying active. I love travelling and exploring new places. This year, I have completed three half marathons and recently started taking part in triathlons — an exciting new challenge.”
- On Tuesday, June 16, the HSE’s Spark Programme will host its annual summit to showcase and recognise staff across the organisation who are creating innovative healthcare solutions in hospitals and communities nationwide
