7am

Three years ago, I traded the hustle and bustle of Dublin for the more relaxed shores of Waterford.

Now, I start my day with a walk on the beach or a dip in the sea. I’ve even joined a Couch2Cave sea-swimming programme, which has helped me overcome a long-standing fear of the sea. Working remotely has been a smooth transition, especially as the ITS team also moved to remote working this year, with Dublin as our central hub.

8am

My work day starts with thinking time and strategic planning. Today, I’m considering how we are tracking against our long-term organisational goals.

The day’s operational tasks start with responding to a variety of members’ queries. Our members are healthcare professionals caring for patients with respiratory disease across the island. Respiratory diseases cover a broad spectrum — some examples include COPD, asthma, and lung cancer.

9am

With the immediate tasks completed, I refocus on my week ahead. A key component of my role involves advocacy and, right now, we’re gearing up for World Lung Day on September 25. The theme is ‘clean air and healthy lungs for all’.

Air pollution in Ireland is responsible for 1,400 premature deaths annually. We are encouraging people to walk to work, quit smoking, or have kids cycle to school. Every day, small actions collectively make a big difference.

11am

After a quick break, I meet with the Lung Health Alliance, a group of Irish charities that promote healthy lungs for all, to discuss how we can amplify our collective impact.

1pm

I make the most of where I’m living with a lunchtime walk on the beach.

2pm

The afternoon is dedicated to our upcoming events. The Annual Scientific Meeting will be held in Derry this November,  with 400 attendees. We’re reviewing research submissions with our expert panel to decide who will present at the conference. We are also planning for our spring meeting in Belfast in March 2025, a partnership with the British Thoracic Society.

5pm

I reflect on the day and plan the priority list for tomorrow. Since relocating, I finish on time. It is not just about time for myself, it is about maintaining my wellbeing, so I can lead ITS effectively.
