Working Life: My work is based on increasing awareness of sepsis

5.45am

I start my day with yoga and meditation, followed by a quick breakfast. Then it’s time to make sure the children are up and ready for school before heading to work.

7.30am

At work in Tallaght University Hospital, I start by scanning through my emails, prioritising work for the day.

Sepsis Awareness Week takes place every September, so I spend the morning finalising details for the week of events we have planned.

Sepsis is a medical emergency, and it has to be identified and treated early. All my work is based on increasing the knowledge and awareness of sepsis identification and management for healthcare professionals, patients and families.

The earlier that sepsis is detected, the better the outcome for the patient. It is so important that people recognise the signs early and look for medical assistance.

12pm

I attend the nursing meetings in clinical areas for further education on sepsis.

I always try to make my education sessions innovative and inclusive, for example, a sepsis quiz for the staff to participate in, and grand rounds on sepsis for all healthcare professionals at the hospital lecture theatre.

I am also part of all orientation and induction programmes on sepsis and delirium education for nurses and medical and nursing interns.

1pm

I catch up with colleagues over a quick lunch in our canteen.

1.30pm

In the afternoon I go back to the clinical area do some spot checks on sepsis delirium documentation to make sure it’s accurate.

In addition, I support our simulation education facilitator.

4pm

Back at my desk, I liaise with our Centre for Learning and Development as we are arranging education days for the community on sepsis.

I collate education attendance data for the day and do the final preparation for our Zero Harm awareness week events.

The Tallaght University Hospital initiative is designed to reduce preventable illness through innovation and public information.

5pm

I head home and collect the children for our cricket training.

I am part of the local and Cricket Leinster Women’s Committee to support the development of women’s cricket.
