Sunday's TV tips - Despicable Me, Glastonbury, Top Gear and more

Despicable Me (ITV2, 3.50pm)

(2010) Directors Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud are now two of the worlds hottest film-makers thanks to this movie and its sequel.

Though this first instalment isnt as laugh-out-loud funny as its follow-up, the tale of Gru, a criminal mastermind planning to steal the moon, is full of sweet touches, mostly provided by the three orphan girls he adopts.

With a fine vocal cast, including Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand and Julie Andrews, this is great fun for all the family.

However, it’s Gru’s bickering, boisterous minions who steal the show - no wonder they now have their own spin-off movie (also directed by Coffin, alongside Kyla Balda), which was released last week.

Top Gear (BBC2, 8pm)

Chris Evans may have been confirmed as Top Gear’s new presenter following a surprisingly car-centric TFI Friday special, but it seems we haven’t quite seen the last of the old team.

This episode features two films that were shot for the previous series before Jeremy Clarkson had his now infamous ’fracas’.

The first sees Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May setting off in affordable classic cars including a Fiat 124 Spyder, a Peugeot 304 Cabriolet and an MGB GT on an adventure that takes in brown beer and breakdowns.

For their second excursion, the trio will be investigating sports utility vehicles on an extremely tight budget, while taking on the Stig’s ’Leisure Activity Cousin’.

Paul Weller @ Glastonbury (BBC4, 8pm)

Jo Whiley introduces coverage of the singer-songwriter and former Jam frontman’s performance on the Pyramid stage as the last day of the music festival draws to a close.

Weller is no stranger to the Glastonbury stage – in fact, the 2015 event marks the fourth time he has graced it with his presence, and you can bet that some of the revellers bought tickets on the strength of his appearance alone.

He has promised to perform songs from throughout his 25-year solo career, including those from his latest album, Saturn’s Pattern.

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (BBC1, 9pm)

England is plunged into chaos as ancient magical forces are unleashed on the world and the dark prophecy of the Raven King looks to be fulfilled.

Norrell flees to the safety of his library, but is pursued by Strange, who intends to free Arabella before the Gentleman’s curse consumes him.

Childermass tries to find a way to break the enchantment on Lady Pole, as Stephen is drawn deeper into the sinister world of the Fairy kingdom. Conclusion of the fantasy drama starring Bertie Carvel and Eddie Marsan. Last in the series.

Humans (C4, 9pm)

Laura tries to get rid of Anita, but is forced to reconsider when the synth saves Toby’s life. Joe begins to share his wife’s suspicions that there is something strange about Anita when he checks her for damage and finds she appears more human than expected.

George comes up with a plan to escape his joyless new routine under Vera’s care, and Pete and Karen investigate a murder at the brothel – but when Pete loses his temper on duty, he finds himself suspended and stuck at home with Simon for company.

The Specialist (3e, 9pm)

(1994) Sylvester Stallone and Sharon Stone star in this hard-edged thriller about an ex-CIA explosives expert (Stallone) who helps a seductive beauty (Stone) avenge the murder of her parents by a powerful Cuban-American crime boss.

Starring: Sylvester Stallone, Sharon Stone.

The Mechanic (Film4, 9pm)

(2011) This is a loose remake of the 1972 Charles Bronson movie of the same name.

When his mentor Harry is killed for apparently double-crossing his employers, hit man Arthur Bishop decides to take the dead man’s son under his wing and teach him the tricks of their dubious trade. Well, it’s what his old dad would have wanted, surely?

Even for a remake, it’s a bit on the derivative side, and the morals of the movie don’t bear too much thinking about – it seems that as long as Arthur’s targets are even worse than he is, we can turn a blind eye to his profession.

But what the film does have going for it is leading man Jason Statham, who proves why he’s become Hollywood’s go-to guy for taciturn, charismatic action heroes and helps to turn this into a mindlessly entertaining thriller.

Sex and the City 2 (TV3, 10pm)

(2010) What happens after you say, "I do?" It's been two years since Carrie Bradshaw and Big (Chris Noth) tied the knot. Now, somewhere between wild passion and a baby, they're feeling a little too much like "Mr. and Mrs. Married!"

So when Carrie and her archetypal galpals take off on an all-expenses week in Abu Dhabi, they soon discover how much fun "forbidden" can be! Halfway across the world, she stumbles upon long-lost love Aidan (John Corbett), and even though she's convinced it means something, the girls think she's playing with fire.

Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon and (all of) their men reunite with series executive producer Michael Patrick King in this follow-up to the $400+ million global box-office smash comedy about fashion, fun and friendship!

Starring: Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon

Blue Valentine (Channel 4, 12.50am)

(2010) Dean and Cindy meet, fall in love and get married – and that’s where the problems start.

While Dean’s laid-back, free-spirited approach to life may once have seemed charming, after six years and a child together, for Cindy, the charm is starting to wear very thin. Can a night away in a hotel save their crumbling marriage, or just push it to breaking point?

If you’re looking for a good first date movie, keep searching. Dramas about relationship breakdowns don’t come more unflinching than this, and flashbacks to Dean and Cindy’s early romance only make it more poignant.

Luckily, it’s also insightful and compelling, while the astonishing performances from Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling keep it from becoming too depressing.
