(2011) Tomboy skateboarding prodigy Kim Matthews (Felicity Jones) abandons the sport she loves after her life is touched by tragedy. She settles for a humdrum job in a fast-food restaurant so she can take care of her hapless father, Richard (Bill Bailey).

In order to earn more money, Kim accepts a position as an Alpine chalet attendant at the highly exclusive St Anton resort. Within minutes of arriving, Kim is put in her place by resident queen bees Georgie (Tamsin Egerton) and Jules (Georgia King).

However, the new girl makes an immediate impression on playboy Jonny Madsen (Ed Westwick), son of wealthy, jet-setting couple Richard (Bill Nighy) and Caroline (Brooke Shields), who are renting the chalet that Kim has been hired to maintain.

Inside Manchester’s Midland Hotel (C5, 9pm)

It’s our final visit to one of Manchester’s grandest hotels, and the programme’s makers have saved the best – or at least the most dramatic – until last.

The establishment’s security team is placed on high alert as campaigners gather outside to protest against an event taking part in one of the hotel’s function rooms.

Then, the fire alarm goes off, stink bombs are let off and the police arrive, leaving the staff to escort the guests to safety.

It’s not great timing either – complaints about breakfast and falling takings at the bar mean that not all is well and keeping customers happy is of premium importance. Can matters be turned around, despite the worrying security crisis?

Kevin McCloud’s Escape to the Wild (C4, 9pm)

Kevin travels to Central America to meet British family-of-five the Atkinsons, who have quit London to live a simpler existence in the rainforests of Belize.

As he attempts to understand their motivations for the move, he suffers from the heat, is attacked by swarms of biting insects and shares his mud hut with a large scorpion, but begins to appreciate the rewards of a simple jungle life, one in which they’ve constructed a two-storey building entirely from recycled rubbish.

Avatar (Film4, 9.00pm)

(2009) James Cameron’s sci-fi epic sees paraplegic war veteran Jake (Sam Worthington) enlisting under warmonger Colonel Quaritch (Stephen Lang), who is attempting to infiltrate an alien race, the Na’vi, on their home planet of Pandora.

Unfortunately, Pandora will not support human life, so doctor Grace (Sigourney Weaver) comes up with a revolutionary plan to meld the minds of soldiers with Na’vi doppelgangers, who can move among the aliens undetected.

As his Na’vi alter ego, Jake meets a beautiful warrior and falls under her spell. Moreover, he manages to become part of the upper echelons of Na’vi society.

When Quaritch declares war on Pandora and launches a full-scale invasion, Jake and his fellow soldiers Trudy and Parker pledge their support to repel the human attack.

My Mad Fat Diary (E4, 10pm)

The comedy based on the diaries of 16-year-old Rae Earl returns for a final three episodes, with Sharon Rooney on top form as the beleaguered teen heroine.

It’s June 1998 and Rae’s future in Stamford looks bright despite a disastrous university interview, as she drinks, dances and dates her way to happiness, and even manages to land the hottest guy in the North.

But change is on the horizon as her friends make plans to move on, and her attempts to maintain the status quo backfire in spectacular fashion.
