Film Review: Comedy trio Please Don't Destroy's movie debut is charming - but monotonous

"There’s no whiff of any illegal substance along the way, but Please Don’t Destroy is strongly reminiscent of the kind of stoner comedy that features hapless characters stumbling about saying things that might just be funny if they’re repeated often enough."

Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain (15A) stars the ‘Please Don’t Destroy’ comedy trio Ben Marshall, John Higgins, and Martin Herlihy, who play 20-something slacker friends who set off for Foggy Mountain, where they frequently vacationed as kids, to track down its fabled treasure: a long-lost bust of Marie Antoinette reputedly worth a hundred million dollars.

The quest won’t be easy given that park rangers Taylor (X Mayo) and Lisa (Megan Stalter) are also on the hunt; besides, the mountain is home to a cult led by Deetch Nordwind (Bowen Yang).

The main obstacle, however, is the sheer ineptitude of the goofy trio themselves, who somehow manage to snatch disaster from the jaws of every opportunity.

There’s no whiff of any illegal substance along the way, but Please Don’t Destroy is strongly reminiscent of the kind of stoner comedy that features hapless characters stumbling about saying things that might just be funny if they’re repeated often enough.

Charmingly offbeat to begin with, the style very quickly becomes monotonous and wearying.
