Work has begun on a former railway station in Adare, acquired for €2m ahead of the Ryder Cup 2027.
Iarnród Éireann has announced the start of construction on the temporary station, which will be used to bring thousands of golf fans to the tournament.
The station, which was sold for just over €216,000 more than a decade ago, was repurchased for €2m at the end of last year.
The development will include a platform and external concourse, with construction expected to take six months.
This comes as the laying of a new rail line connecting Limerick with Adare has been completed.
From there, shuttle services will meet trains arriving from Dublin and Cork, allowing passengers to interchange.
Funded by the department of transport through the National Transport Authority, works on the old Adare station are being delivered by Cara Plant Hire Limited.
According to the semi-state rail operator, special Ryder Cup services are likely to run outside regular timetable hours, using the existing train fleet. These will operate as shuttle services between Limerick Junction and Adare on the reinstated Foynes rail line.
Ryder Cup attendees will not be able to travel directly from Limerick City’s Colbert Station to Adare, as the main transport hub will be located at Limerick Junction.
Work to reinstate the 42km Limerick to Foynes rail line is ongoing, with completion expected in October.
Refurbishment works are also under way at Foynes Station, which will be used as staff accommodation during the project.
