Chainsaws are among the most hazardous pieces of equipment used on farms and can cause life-changing injuries or fatalities when used incorrectly.

Farmers and farm workers are encouraged to take advantage of a series of fully funded chainsaw training courses.

The Farm Relief Services (FRS) training courses will be available countrywide over the coming months and involve a two-day chainsaw operations training course (QQI Level 5). The training courses are fully funded by the department and will be taking place at locations all around the country from August through to the end of October.

Chainsaws are among the most hazardous pieces of equipment used on farms and can cause life-changing injuries or fatalities when used incorrectly.

Common accidents include severe lacerations, kickback injuries, cuts to the legs and feet, and injuries resulting from poor maintenance, inadequate PPE, or a lack of training.

Proper instruction in safe operating techniques, equipment maintenance, risk assessment and the correct use of protective equipment is essential to reduce these risks and ensure chainsaws are used safely and effectively.

The two-day course is designed for anyone aged 16 years or older who is actively involved in farming and wishes to develop the knowledge and practical skills required to safely maintain and operate a chainsaw.

Participants will learn essential skills including:

  • Safe chainsaw maintenance and inspection;
  • Chain sharpening and routine servicing;
  • Safe operating techniques;
  • Risk assessment and hazard awareness;
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements;
  • Practical chainsaw operation techniques.

As the course includes practical outdoor activities, learners must bring the appropriate chainsaw PPE, including chainsaw protective trousers, boots and jacket, a safety helmet with visor and ear protection and protective gloves.

Head of sales and operations at FRS Training Ben Fearn, said: "Every year, we hear of serious injuries resulting from chainsaw use, many of which could be prevented through proper training and the use of appropriate PPE.

"These fully funded courses offer an excellent opportunity to achieve a nationally recognised QQI qualification in chainsaw maintenance and operation, providing participants with the knowledge, practical skills and safety awareness needed to operate and maintain a chainsaw safely.”

To qualify for the free training, applicants must be able to confirm their involvement in farming. For full details and to view upcoming course dates, visit the FRS Training website.
