A meeting for members of the public to hear about water quality progress and an action plan for the East Cork area is set to take place on May 19.

The community information meeting on Tuesday, May 19, in Midleton is being held to make more people aware of work to improve water quality in the Municipal District and to encourage as much engagement as possible with everyone in the community, including key agencies, special interest groups, farmers, voluntary, public and private sectors.

The Local Authority Waters Programme (LAWPRO) will be hosting the meeting, presenting progress made so far in the area and also announcing the action cycle.

The meeting will be held at the Talbot Hotel, on the Old Cork Road, Glebe, Midelton, Cork, P25 AX67, and starts at 7.30pm, with tea and coffee provided from 7pm.

LAWPRO works on behalf of Ireland’s 31 local authorities to protect and restore good water quality in rivers, lakes, estuaries, ground and coastal water. The district is considered a Priority Area for Action (PAA) to implement targeted water quality improvements.

The meeting will host LAWPRO experts, who will take attendees through the work that has been carried out in the second cycle and what is being planned for the third cycle of the Water Action Plan, which will run until December 2027.

There will also be opportunities for the public to ask questions and talk to members of the Agricultural Sustainability Support and Advisory Programme (ASSAP).

Ahead of the public meeting, director of services with LAWPRO, Anthony Coleman, said: “We hope to engage as many people as possible at this meeting in Cork because public participation and support are key to achieving water quality improvements.

"We would also like to thank all those, whether in a voluntary or paid capacity, working in their local areas to help make a difference to their natural waters and the biodiversity that lives in and around them.”
