The 88-acre farm near Tralee sold at auction recently.

A property that was featured on this site on August 20 was successfully sold at auction on Wednesday, October 15, at the Listowel Arms Hotel.

The property up for sale was at Ballygrenane, just south of Listowel. The man with the gavel on the day was Tom Dillon of Listowel-based Dillon-Prendeville Auctioneers.

The farm, he pointed out, was in an idyllic location, with picturesque views of the River Feale, of Listowel and its famous racecourse.

Indeed, there was a clear connection with this farm to the world of racing. It was a probate sale of the estate of the late Eamon Foran, who was a well-known horse breeder and trainer, who also served as Director of Listowel Race Company for 45 years, being twice elected chairman.

In addition to a dwelling and farmyard with traditional outbuildings, there was an enclosed round-roof arena and 800m of road frontage — the main road dividing the holding.

Although it was presented in a choice of lots, the demand was focused on the entire property and that is how it was sold. It had a pre-auction AMV of €1,125,000.

“There were five active bidders in the room,” says Tom. “The opening bid was €1,100,000 and the hotly-contested property went up in increments of €25,000 to €1,600,000.

“It increased to €1,620,000 and thereafter increased in €10,000 increments until it reached €1,660,000; at which point the hammer fell — sold to a local solicitors firm, Purtill Woulfe Murphy.”
