Some of the scenic 266-acre farm at Derrynafeana, Glencar, Co Kerry.

Killarney-based auctioneer Tom Spillane is selling what must be the most scenic holding on offer in Ireland this week.

The property is a 266-acre farm at Derrynafeana, near Glencar, Co Kerry. The large holding is in two separate entities, in the shadow of the MacGillycuddy Reeks and overlooking Lough Acoose, 4km west (as the crow flies) of Carrantuohill.

“There’s a good level of interest in it so far,” said Mr Spillane of the large property. “There’s a mixture of land use here, with around 115 acres of commercial timber planted on it, for which there’s a felling licence approved.

“Then there are roughly 151 acres of grazing land making up the rest of the holding.”

With good public road access, this is in the heart of one of Ireland’s most well-loved locations, about 15km from Killorglin and 29km from Killarney.

While there is certainly value in it from an agricultural point of view, one cannot overlook other possibilities with regard to tourism development.

There is, crucially, an intact two-storey farmhouse which is need of repair. The Kerry Way walking route passes through these lands, crossing in a north-south line through the rugged mixed lands.

The guide price for this large chunk of prime Kerry paradise is €550,000. At just €2,000/acre, paradise doesn’t get much more affordable than this.
