Dramatic uptake in renewable energy generation on farms forecast

The next few years will see a dramatic uptake in renewable energy generation on farms, according to Teagasc.

Energy in Agriculture, a conference at Gurteen Agriculture College in Co Tipperary on August 20 will review existing technologies.

Barry Caslin, Teagasc Energy and Rural Development Specialist, said he is confident renewable energy opportunities driven by a policy framework will open new opportunities in agriculture.

Agriculture Minister Michael Creed, who launched the conference on the farm of Michéal Looney, Kilpatrick, Macroom, Co. Cork, said it is an extremely valuable event in creating awareness of the benefits of renewable technologies.

Speakers will share insights on real opportunities to make financial savings and reduce energy consumption on-farm. The latest in agri-technology will be on view at the event which will have over 60 exhibitors.

The conference is a joint initiative between Teagasc, Tipperary County Council, the Irish Farmers Association, Tipperary Energy Agency and Gurteen Agricultural College with the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) as the main sponsor
