Farm Focus with FBD ... Explaining the Land Mobility Scheme
The Land Mobility Service has become an option for some people, marrying the resource of farm land with the separate resource of manpower.
An FBD Trust-funded initiative, its stakeholders include Teagasc, Dairygold and Glanbia. Austin Finn of the Service outlines some of the options available:
- The family farm partnership
- Share farming
- Long-term leasing
- Farm to farm
Any arrangement is based around ‘the three Ps’ — the person who will work the land, a fair, realistic and sustainable price, as well as the period of time.
Deterrents can be issues such as insufficient young trained farmer engagement, Basic Payment Scheme entitlement issues, low margins in specific sectors and some restrictions that may be attached to schemes such as GLAS.
- See: www.landmobility.ie for more information.
- Both Karen and Austin discuss land succession and transfer in the latest Irish Examiner farming podcast.
