Buoyant timber prices, SFP, grants and tax breaks all add to appeal of forestry

The Teagasc Forestry Development Department is inviting farmers to a nationwide series of free forestry clinics, running from Jan 28 to Feb 8.
Buoyant timber prices, SFP, grants and tax breaks all add to appeal of forestry

Teagasc says forestry is an excellent land use option on suitable land and in appropriate circumstances.

With the planting season in full swing, now is an ideal time for farmers and landowners to consider the merits of forestry as an enterprise with the potential to complement other farming activities. Applicants considering forestry are advised to apply without delay, because it takes time for applications to be processed.

Along with generous planting grants and premium payments, tax concessions, buoyant timber prices and a growing interest in new markets such as wood for energy, farmers in forestry may also benefit substantially under the Single Farm Payment Scheme.

The annual premium for a mainly conifer crop of Sitka spruce on enclosed and improved land continues at €427 per hectare for 20 years. The recent announcement of an unchanged allocation of €116m for the forestry programme, which encompasses afforestation grants, premium payments and support schemes, confirmed Government confidence in the forest sector’s contribution to economic recovery.

This includes payment for about 7,000 hectares of new planting. Teagasc Forestry Development staff offer independent and objective advice on land use options to maximise future farm incomes. Farmers and landowners considering the merits of forestry are invited to the clinics in local Teagasc offices throughout the country. They will provide one-to-one consultation with experienced Teagasc forestry advisers. Similar clinics held in 2012 were very well attended, with farmers advised on issues such as land suitability, environmental compatibility, interaction of forestry with other farm schemes, and potential returns on investment.

During the clinics, advisers can provide financial advice on afforestation and management scenarios, using a forestry investment programme.

Interested landowners should bring maps and other relevant information or correspondence.

Most clinics will take place in local Teagasc offices between 10am and 4pm. Prior booking is essential, see the www.teagasc.ie/forestry for information. There will be six clinics in Co Cork, three in Kerry, three in Clare, two in Limerick, three in Tipperary, and one in Waterford.
