Fencing might prove sting in tail for farmers

The IFA’s National Industrial Committee are studying contracts between the National Roads Authority, County Councils and landowners, which seem to stipulate that the landowner will be responsible for maintaining wooden fencing.

John Riordan, a member of the Committee, told a recent Limerick IFA meeting that many farmers could face costs of €10,000 to €20,000 for replacement of the fence. He said that the roadside fences are expected to last up to 15 years, but farmers were having problems with fencing posts which do not last very long, and if the same problem arose with roadside fences, some landowners could face big bills.
