I concur with correspondent Dick Spicer, of Citizens to Separate Church and State, who asserts that the President’s religious oath is a violation of equal rights. 

I refer to Dr Kevin McCarthy’s letter (Irish Examiner, May 2). How tired I get of the intellectual smugness of self styled liberals who perpetuate the myth that conservatives (note the small ‘c’) are all unreconstructed misogynistic xenophobes.

Because it was enacted in the name of the Most Holy Trinity and acknowledges “all our obligations to our Divine Lord Jesus Christ,” the Constitution upholds the union of man and woman, with its potential for the begetting of children, as “the institution of marriage (civil or religious), on which the family is founded.”

Civil marriages and the sacrament of marriage are as apples and oranges. 

On June 4, 1919, HM Submarine L55 sank in the Baltic Sea. L55 had been targeting two Bolshevik warships. It is unclear whether the submarine was sunk by Bolshevik gunfire or from straying into a British-laid minefield.

Not long ago, we had a referendum on the rights of children and their right to be heard.

So far in this marriage referendum we have been told that it is about equality and redefining marriage.

What about the Government handing over €1bn for the creation of 1,000 jobs in a 36-club (two divisions of 18), unified, full-time Irish league.

J’accuse the Irish government of selling out to vested interests.
