First 8K video now available on YouTube

Not many people have the equipment needed to either shoot or watch 8K video, but it has made its way to YouTube anyways.

A clip called Ghost Towns is now available on YouTube, letting viewers bask in glorious picture quality. The video is a slow-panning journey through what seems to be a recently abandoned mining settlement.

Ghost Towns was shot using a RED Epic Dragon 6K camera in portrait orientation. To hit the higher resolution, some of the footage was upscaled or stitched together with Adobe's After Effects suite.

The clip is also available to watch in lower resolution. But now that we know it’s available in 8K, everything else seems like scant consolation.

YouTube started supporting 4K video in 2010 when just a handful of people could record or even watch video at that quality. Now, the technology has become more commonplace. Perhaps 8K will be rather ordinary to us in just a few short years.
