Royal Bank of Scotland said today it was in good shape after half-year profits hit £5bn (€7.4bn) and it eased worries about recent market turbulence.

The owner of NatWest, Direct Line and Ulster Bank maintained its strong recent growth with an 11% increase in group operating profits to £5.11 billion.
