Forestry grants boost farm income

FARMERS who have planted grant-aided forestry on their farm have a higher income, according to Teagasc.

Forestry grants boost farm income

Dr Nuala Ní Fhlatharta, head of forestry in Teagasc, said every farmer should seriously investigate the farm forestry option as incentives have never been as attractive as right now.

“By applying immediately, farmers can still plant during the current season, which is now in full swing,” she said

Dr Ní Fhlatharta said Teagasc invites landowners to contact their nearest forestry adviser immediately. An free, and objective, and confidential consultation at a Teagasc office nearby will then be arranged.

“Our forestry advisers provide a nationwide independent advisory service to all landowners interested in planting free of charge,” she said.

Describing farm forestry as an excellent, tax-efficient on-farm investment, she said it provides an everlasting supply of timber.

It also creates an ecosystem for many plants and animals while providing shelter for livestock and crops in adjoining fields. Wood can also be used to efficiently heat our homes, she said.

Michael Somers, forestry adviser in Tipperary, said some landowners are investigating the option of an on-farm investment fund while others are more interested in creating an on-farm haven for wildlife.

There is a wide range of forestry schemes available such as the Afforestation Scheme, and the Forest Environment Protection Scheme.
